以下为课程介绍摘要:

Isotope Biogeochemistry

Laodong Guo (laodong.guo@usm.edu)

Xiamen University

Course Description:

Stable and radioactive isotopes are powerful tracers in understanding of chemical, biological, geological and physical processes in marine environments.  Isotope biogeochemistry plays an important role in a variety of marine science investigations, both field studies and laboratory experiments.  Graduate students, especially those who majored in chemical, biological and geological, will greatly benefit from this class.  The course is offered to students who are interested in gaining knowledge of isotope biogeochemistry.

Topics to be covered in this course will include the principles and applications of stable isotopes, radiocarbon, radiogenic isotopes from the uranium/thorium decay series, cosmogenic isotopes, and artificial radionuclides.  Radiation safety and detection and measurement techniques, including isotope ratio mass spectrometry,  alpha-, beta-, and gamma-spectroscopy, thermo-ionization mass spectrometry, MC-ICP-MS, and secondary ion mass spectrometry, will also be covered.

Students will gain an understanding of isotope biogeochemistry, analytical techniques for detection and measurements of isotopes, and applications of naturally occurring radionuclides and isotope labeling techniques in tracing biogeochemical processes in marine systems.  Knowledge and skills gained from Isotope Biogeochemistry could add a broad range of approaches to student thesis research.
