Short Curriculum Vitae Prof. Johan Verreth
Johan A.J. Verreth (PhD, Wageningen University 1994) is managing professor of the Department of Animal Sciences at Wageningen University and Chair of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group at the same department. In the latter function, he is responsible for a team of 20-25 academics involved in training and research in the field of aquaculture and fisheries. His teaching and research activities are mainly in the fields of nutrition and nutrient dynamics in aquaculture, and (fish) feeding ecology in both man-made and natural systems. Under his leadership, the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group developed itself as a worldwide recognized expert team in the area of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems, a highly technological and innovative production system for keeping and growing aquatic animals with a minimum of nutrient discharges to the environment and maximal control over welfare and health of the animals. He is currently expanding this technology to a broader concept of ecosystem based aquaculture. This very concept is also being applied and validated in the design and maintenance of public aquaria for marine fish and coral reefs. As a result, over the past 5 years, the Aquaculture and Fisheries Group expanded its field of interest to coral biology, coral culture and aquariology. Retailers and NGO’s such as WWF call upon the expertise of Verreth and his team for advise and scientific support in developing policy plans for a sustainable Tuna Fisheries in the Coral Triangle in S.E. Pacific and for sustainability aspects of fish production, eco-labeling and benchmarking seafood certification schemes against the FAO guidelines of seafood certification. Together with his faculty staff, he coordinated aquaculture and fisheries and fish ecology projects in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Russia, Tanzania and Costa Rica.
Verreth served 10 years as Board member and was President from the European Aquaculture Society between 2004-2006. Between 2005 and 2010, he was Board Member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the French Institut National pour les Recherches d’Agriculture, Alimentation et Environnement (INRA). At Wageningen University he is currently member of the Educational Board, who is responsible for the quality, scope and accountability of Wageningen University’s BSc and MSc Programs.
The Aquaculture and Fisheries Group of Wageningen University established Centres of Excellence in Aquaculture and in Fisheries Ecology together with the Institute of Marine Ecosystem Studies of Wageningen University and Research Centres (Wageningen UR), the main Dutch organization for marine and fisheries sciences.
