Abstract:

Gas bubbles are ubiquitous in the surface ocean boundary layer (OBL). After their injection by breaking surface gravity waves, gas bubbles are mixed by boundary layer turbulence, rise by buoyancy, change size, and exchange gases with the ambient water. Gas bubbles provide an important pathway for air-sea gas transfer at moderate to high wind speed. Hydrostatic pressure and surface tension exerting on bubbles is able to squeeze gases into the ocean even at slight supersaturation. Although the importance of gas bubbles in air-sea gas transfer has been realized, it is poorly parameterized in climate model due to the incomplete understanding in bubble evolution. Recently, we developed a coupled LES -- bubble population -- dissolved gas model (LES stands for Large Eddy Simulation). In this talk, I will present solutions for bubbly flows (1) after a single breaking wave in a laboratory channel, and (2) in a turbulent ocean boundary layer. I will also discuss how bubble evolution changes with turbulent intensity and how existing air-sea gas transfer parameterization can be improved.
