Microbes in surface waters of most of the world’s oceans are limited by the availability of combined (fixed) nitrogen. In the past decade, N2 fixation by marine cyanobacteria has been shown to be as important to euphotic zone plankton as the flux of NO3 from deep water into surface waters. The organisms responsible for N2 fixation are discussed as well as the environmental factors that affect photosynthesis and N2 fixation. Rates of N2 fixation are compared in different oceans. The special conditions which promote N2 fixation in the Amazon River plume in the North Atlantic Ocean are illustrated. Recent estimates of N2 fixation and denitrification are compared in regard to the balance of the nitrogen cycle in the global ocean.
