Abstract:
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) stored on Earth contributes the largest flux of organic carbon from land to oceans worldwide. The large DOM pool links organic carbon with CO2 and drives the global carbon cycle since it is believed that the short- to medium- term fate of DOM is conversion to greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and CH4. I will elaborate some of the new insights learned over the last few years, showing that a significant portion of terrestrial DOM can sustain during the transport from land to the Ocean, rather than being completely respired to CO2. Owing to the recent advances in analytical techniques in the field of environmental chemistry and geochemistry, we are capable of closely examining the molecular rearrangement of DOM upon photoirradiation, potentially by reactive oxygen species, to form molecularly unrecognizable organic molecules such as humic substances. Ongoing and future studies aim to provide transformative understanding of the pathway in which the large pool of terrestrial DOM becomes disseminated among the large carbon reservoirs, and to improve the general understanding of how carbon, nitrogen, and iron are cycled on different time scales.
